On June 13, 2012, a Dallas County grand jury indicted three additional suspects in the animal cruelty case involving a puppy that was allegedly doused with a flammable liquid and set on fire on April 4, 2012, at an apartment complex in Dallas. As a result of the grand jury indictments, arrest warrants for cruelty to non-livestock animals were issued for the following individuals: Richard Anthony Valentine, Darius Lamar Carey and Adrian Michael Ayers.
This charge has been enhanced to a 3rd degree felony by indictment due to the use of a deadly weapon while committing the offense. Therefore, the punishment range the defendants are facing is two to 10 years in prison.
Darius Carey and Richard Valentine have turned themselves in and are now in custody at Lew Sterrett Justice Center. Adrian Ayers was already in custody on an unrelated offense. Additionally, in the case of the State vs.
Darius Ewing, the first suspect indicted for this animal cruelty offense, the trial has been set for November 12, 2012.
